New Monthly Case Filings

Select a period below the graph to view its summary. Vertical markers indicate transitions described below the graph.

Monthly counts are based on the filing dates of newly filed cases identified in the Montana Public Court Access Portal. Cases that are no longer visible have a substituted nearby date. Due to a nation wide data breach during 2026; the dates between March 2026 and July 2026 are either previously recorded or reflect nearby dates that allow an even distribution across the months with corrupted dates. There are few cases in this period.

The rolling average is the average of the current month and preceding two calendar months (using available months at the beginning of the series).

Choose a period or year to compare the recorded charge composition. Select a sunburst segment to explore the categories and charge codes.

Interactive Charge Composition for New Cases

Hover over a segment to see the category or charge name, count, and share of the chart total. Click a segment to zoom in; click the center to zoom out. Colors are consistent by category across views. The chart shows charge codes recorded in new cases and the number of new cases in the selected period containing at least one charge associated with each code. A case may contain charges under multiple codes and may therefore be counted under more than one code; counts across codes should not be added to estimate distinct cases.

Code-level counts show new cases containing at least one charge associated with each code. A case may be counted under more than one code, so totals across codes may exceed the number of distinct new cases. If a case has no code entered, its recorded description is retained under “Uncoded charge information.”

The elected-term summary information covers November 6, 2024 to October 2, 2026; its July 4 - October 2, 2026 subsection is compared with the earlier portion of the elected term. Cases for selected charge and year

Select a point on the chart to list the filing date and case number for that charge in that year.

Counts are distinct new cases, not the total number of individual charges. Each case is counted once per code in its filing year, even if the case includes multiple counts of that same code. A case may be counted under more than one code, so counts across codes should not be added to estimate distinct cases. 2026 covers January 1 through October 2 and is not a full year. Filing dates follow the source workbook, including substituted nearby dates where noted above.
